Kazuya Kinoshita is a college student who is dumped by his girlfriend after a month of dating. To cure his depression, he rents a girlfriend named Chizuru Mizuhara, but is dissatisfied by how inauthentic she acts. Their second date consists of him calling her out, which leads to her revealing her true colors.
The above opinion that I gave of this anime is of course my personal opinion but now I want to back it up with reasons.
First of all, it's a slice of life anime and not a boring one. I remember too, I was searching the internet like you whether to watch it or not because I saw some say it was nothing but fan service anime and some supporting the anime like it's their life. So I was confused and feared that I would waste my time watching it but let me tell you it was 100% worth my while. If I have to say more I will state that it became one of my all-time favorite anime.
Is Rent-a-Girlfriend a fan service anime?
And now to the point of Rent-a-Girlfriend anime being a total fan service anime, it's not. Yes, there are some of those scenes but that is nothing compared to the animes we usually see. The amount of those scenes in this anime are a totally common thing to rom-com anime like this. Nothing to worried about. And to add to that those arguments those scenes are mostly because of the character of our main character 'Kazuya'. those scenes in this anime not only work as fan service scenes but also help tell the story and also the character of our MC(Main Character). If you are confused by my words that I stated above then just trust me on this, you will understand when you will watch the anime. And now for those who like those kinds of scenes, you will not be disappointed😜.
Is Rent-a-Girlfriend fun to watch?
Hell yeah! It's very fun to watch. I still remember I watched the whole season in one day and the whole time I had my eyes full of water because of laughter. Disclaimer: I must confess one thing, for some the actions of MC can be irritating and unbearable which pulls out the fun from it, so to avoid that from happening you have to watch the series form a particular point of view which will change your mindset and make the series more fun to watch than becoming cringe and unbearable. To know about that approach keep reading and I will get to it in a bit. So other than that problem Rent-a-Girlfriend is near to a perfect rom-com.
Broad Review:
Rent-a-Girlfriend is a fresh take on rom-com anime which is the reason it took the throne from the finale of the best rom-com anime "My Youth Romantic Comedy IS Wrong, As I Expected (Oregairu)". When I went into the anime I did not expect that good of a story because of all the comments I read. I was genuinely surprised. Rent-a-Girlfriend gave me an immense amount of pleasure, and if you are wondering why I am pushing this much toward watching the anime it's because I want you to have the same fun I had. I liked it so much so that I learned how to set up a blog and now I am writing about it.
If you are wondering, yes this my first blog, and Rent-a-Girlfriend is the sole reason that compelled me to do it so I hope you get it now.
The first two episodes will definitely hook you in and will make you want to know what will happen next that's why I could not stop myself from finishing the whole season in one day. Oh yeah if you are wondering how many episodes the season has, it has 12 fun-packed Episodes.
Why is Rent-a-Girlfriend getting hate?
Don't misunderstand, from the word 'hate' I don't mean full-on hate movement, I meat the little bit of hate that it is getting from viewers. It's because of as I mentioned above the MC's actions and the way he behaves. Some people may even consider him SIMP. But my argument to that comment is that Rent-a-Girlfriend is one of the most realistic anime ever made. The author really put his thought on MC's character. He is the most relatable anime character ever, mostly for boys. That is also the reason why he is getting the most hate. People watch anime because they want to see a perfect character achieving everything he wants and they got habituated to that type of MC. But Reiji Miyajima, the mangaka(the writer) broke the trend and brought to us a new type of the main character who is just like us, thinks like us, acts like us. He is not someone who has a destiny in favor of him. He is one of us. That is the reason people fail to see him as a normal person instead they expect him to be a perfect human being who can take all the responsibility which leads to all the hatred he is getting. It's just a matter of perspective of how you look at this anime. And that brings us to the point of how to watch the anime.
From what perspective should we watch Rent-a-Girlfriend?
While watching just keep it in mind that the main character KAZUYA is a 20-year old college student who didn't have any luck with girls till now meaning he didn't had any girlfriends till now thus don't have any experience on how to talk to a girl or confront his feeling to a girl. He is experiencing all of this for the first time. He is not a brave mature person who knows how to control his feeling and knows exactly what to do and what not to do. Yes, there may be some of you who are experts with a woman and know exactly what to do but I assume most of us like me know deep down that we too won't be able to do shit if we are in the same situation as the MC. So try to put yourself in the situation of KAZUYA and then see the anime. He will make many mistakes and will take some wrong steps but be broad-minded and think about what you would have done in the situation and you will realize most of the time that you would the same thing. I hope you will apply this same mindset and watch the anime and will have a great amount of fun.
And hey, it's okay if you still don't like the anime. We all have a different opinion and I respect that so don't mind me😊.
Big Brain Analysis of Rent-a-Girlfriend anime:
This anime will truly hit you on the spot emotionally because the MC Kazuya brings up a different vibe of a love story anime MC. After all, Kazuya is not the MC that we wanted to be, Kazuya is the MC that we can relate to and all the 4 girls portray different kind of relationships that we have in real life like for example :
- Ruka chan portrays a girl/boy that likes you but you don't like back.
- Mami chan on the other hand is our failed relationships that we gain experience from but still want to get back to weirdly.
- Chizuru portrays a dream girl/boy that we always want (Crush).
- And at last, Sumi portrays some of the shy relationships out there.
And fun fact or interesting thing here is that the main character Kazuya who doesn't have any experience or idea about dating undergoes all the above-mentioned relationships/situations at the same time which makes the series quite different and fun.
Few words about Rent-a-Girlfriend anime opening:
Rent-a-Girlfriend's opening is literally addictive, so addictive that I am listening to it while writing this blog even though I completed the series a month ago. The opening is perfectly suited to the anime and flawlessly directed. The opening name is "Centimeter" by the peggies. All I got to say is that they did a wonderful job on the opening which suits perfectly the mood of the anime. Although I advise the viewers to skip while watching the series and watch the opening after you complete the season to have a better experience because the song hits you harder and differently after you complete the season.

Rent-a-Girlfriend anime's characters:
Rent-a-Girlfriend anime has very well written characters. The mangaka paid real attention to the characteristics of the characters in the anime to make them as realistic and relatable as possible and it is evident in the anime as I stated above how each and every girl symbolize a different type of relationship a person has in his life and how the MC is very relatable which helps us get immersed into the anime and feel like we are going through the same situations as of the main character. Halfway through the anime, we start reacting before the monitor as if we are actually in that situation which tells us how immersive the anime is. Not only the main character and the 4 girls but the mangaka also wrote other characters really well which added to the awesomeness of the whole anime, for example:
- The Grandma:
It's not wrong to say that for most of the people who completed watching Rent-a-Girlfriend Season-1, Grandma is the best character. I have even heard and seen comments from people who watched the anime that they stayed watching the anime only because of the Grandma. She is just too funny. Whenever she comes onto the screen the whole scene becomes comedic and entertaining. She is not the usual type of grandma but very energetic which you will understand when you will actually watch the anime. She is one of the main components of the story moving forward and a very entertaining one.
- The Friends:
The main character Kazuya doesn't have many friends except for two best friends who are once again very well written character. They too, like grandma, are a crucial part of the story even though they don't have much screen time.
Yoshiaki Kibe:
He doesn't have much screen time but he proved his worthiness with only one scene in the anime. You will realize which scene I am talking about when you will see it. He became a fan favorite by having only one scene and that was enough. I don't want to spoil anything but all I will say is that he is very mature unlike our main character Kazuya and quickly assess the situation and know what to do. He is there for the MC always and earned the title of Best Bro and Best Wingman.
Shun Kuribayashi:
He is a little similar to the main character like being introverted and shy and being a virgin. But he too had a very well character development thanks to a whole episode revolving around him.
Is the idea of renting a girlfriend a little cringe in the anime?
No not at all! Mangaka did a very good job of explaining the idea of renting a girlfriend. I am here neither opposing nor supporting the idea but just explaining its importance and relevance in the anime. We the viewers will get a clear idea of why the girls are working as rentable girlfriends and how it actually helps the people who rent them. I was actually surprised how reasonable that idea sounds after one of the girls explained the meaning behind their job.
Is voice acting done well in Rent-a-Girlfriends?

by the original illustrator of anime. The series became so popular and trending that the next season was announced before the last episode was aired. It also topped almost every chart as Best Fall Anime Of 2020.
All this time I was talking about the anime but I forgot to tell you that Rent-a-Girlfriend manga is still ongoing and currently has over 150 chapters published and recently became one of the most popular manga in China by exceeding sale of 700,000 copies with a spin-off title based on Sumi Sakurasawa titled Kanojo, Hitomishirimasu in Japanese already gaining a lot of support after it's release.
